Just saw this god-awful rear end of the revised/new BMW X5. How did they convince themselves to think this is an improvement over the old design?

I don't think it looks bad, not better than the old one but not significantly worse either.
I'm not a fan of that black plastic skirts though.

Not really, they've built the car before, so it's can't be considered further brand dilution if you ask me.
That said, this monstrosity now weighs (that's the 30d version) 2145 kg, which is some 30 kg more than the respective RR Sport.

These are the same people who were convinced that a 5 series hot hatch would be awesome. So..yeah.

They aren't all black plastic.
The M Sport looks completely different. Painted bits, revised lower back end, etc. The OP was doing apples to oranges by comparing E70 M Sport to F15 M Sport.
